POST-CONVICTION INNOCENCE CASES

Fighting for the Innocent

We represent people who have been wrongfully convicted and sent to prison, often for the rest of their lives. These innocent people are not provided legal representation by the state. Our legal team fights to free the innocent by uncovering new evidence, exposing misconduct, and exonerating them.

UNJUST PUNISHMENT CASES

Fighting for the Unjustly Punished

Louisiana’s criminal legal system incarcerates more people per capita—and sentences more to life without parole—than any other place in the world. Harsh three-strikes laws, accomplice liability rules, and mandatory minimums impose extreme prison sentences without accounting for a person’s actual role in the crime or their capacity for growth and rehabilitation. At Innocence & Justice Louisiana, we fight to free the unjustly punished by challenging excessive sentences, litigating our clients’ rights to new sentences, representing them before the parole board, and uncovering new evidence that sheds light on their right to be free.

THE WRONGFUL CONVICTION CLINIC

Training the Next Generation for Justice

At Innocence & Justice Louisiana, we know that building a more just future means training and educating the people who will lead it. We have partnered with the LSU Law Center to operate the Wrongful Conviction Clinic — an intensive, hands-on legal program where students learn what it really takes to fight for freedom for innocent people in prison.

Nearly half of wrongful convictions in Louisiana have involved police misconduct.

LLEAD

Transparency and Justice

Innocence & Justice Louisiana, in partnership with Public Data Works, developed the Louisiana Law Enforcement Accountability Database (LLEAD.co) to lay bare the systemic issues contributing to wrongful convictions and unjust sentences. The comprehensive, statewide database, consolidates and tracks law enforcement misconduct in the state.
