Changing laws.
Centering truth.
Louisiana’s criminal legal system is one of the most punitive and racially biased in the nation. That’s no accident. Many of our laws were explicitly rooted in racism and the belief that certain people are beyond redemption and should be incarcerated for life. To dismantle this system, we know that changing individual outcomes through direct legal representation is not enough. We must change the laws that make injustice and unjust punishments possible.
At Innocence & Justice Louisiana, we use the power of our cases and the voices of our clients to drive policy change. Through strategic advocacy, we fight to rewrite the rules that lead to wrongful convictions and unjust sentences — and to protect the legal safeguards that remain. Every policy we pursue or legislative change we oppose is grounded in our unwavering goal: to create a legal system that treats every person with dignity, fairness, and humanity.
We work directly with lawmakers, stakeholders, coalitions, community partners, and our clients to prevent wrongful convictions before they happen — and to ensure there are always pathways to correct injustices after conviction.

Our Criminal Justice Reform Priorities:
We oppose excessive sentencing and laws that limit sentence review or early release. We advocate for reforms that ensure fairness in police investigations and prosecutions. We champion robust compensation policies for the innocent individuals who have endured years — even decades — in prison as victims of wrongful conviction.
Why Legislative Advocacy Matters
Our legal victories in the courtroom are powerful — but they are not enough. For every client we free, countless others remain behind bars due to outdated laws, racial bias, and a system stacked against the poor. For every incarcerated person we represent, there are literally thousands without attorneys to fight for them.
Policy reform is how we scale justice. It’s how we make sure that our wins don’t just belong to one person — they belong to the people of Louisiana.
And because many of our clients testify, advocate, and share their stories at the Capitol and in the media, the truth becomes impossible to ignore. Their courage and irreproachable righteousness push change forward.
