Despite Reforms, Louisiana Still Keeps Some Police Data Secret

Despite reforms intended to improve police accountability, Louisiana continues to withhold key law enforcement data from the public, including a database meant to track police certifications and employment histories that could reveal “wandering officers” — those who move between departments after misconduct. Although the state created the database in 2015 to prevent problematic officers from quietly finding new jobs, it has largely failed in that purpose, and regulators now refuse to release the comprehensive data to journalists or the public, citing legal interpretations. This secrecy makes it difficult to monitor officer misconduct, undermines transparency efforts, and leaves gaps in oversight that allow some officers with records of complaints or convictions to continue working in other agencies.
