Many law enforcement agencies failing to report information on departing officers, group finds

A new analysis by the Innocence Project New Orleans reveals that many Louisiana law enforcement agencies are failing to comply with a 2017 state law that requires them to report why officers leave their jobs to the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST), a key step in preventing “wandering officers” from moving between departments without accountability. Of the 148 officers who changed employment status since 2018, more than half lacked any reported reason for departure, and at least 14 of those officers were later rehired elsewhere, highlighting gaps in transparency and oversight and underscoring the importance of publicly accessible databases like the Louisiana Law Enforcement Accountability Database to track officer movements and histories.
