The Police Sexual Violence in New Orleans factsheet, published by the Umbrella Coalition and Advancement Project, reveals that complaints of sexual and intimate violence against community members by New Orleans Police Department officers are pervasive and ongoing, with a complaint filed against an NOPD officer nearly every ten days between 2014 and 2020. Despite federal consent decrees and oversight, hundreds of officers faced allegations ranging from unwanted touching and sexual comments during stops and searches to rape and assault, disproportionately harming Black women, girls, and LGBTQ people, while few complaints result in discipline and many accused officers remain on the force, underscoring systemic failure to address sexual violence in policing and the need for transformative approaches that prioritize survivor safety and alternatives to traditional policing.
